Social media has grown significantly over the past ten years. At first, social media was a new and exciting way to connect with family and friends all over the world, and even meet new people that you would otherwise never have the opportunity to connect with.

With the accessibility of social media and the internet, usage went up significantly. Almost 80% of our world has access to it. Many negative things have come out of social media usage- like a lot of my previous blogs have described, but I also think it has been a great resource in terms of growing businesses and personal brands.

Regarding the future of social media, I think the technical/management side of it is going to continue to expand and garner new capabilities. I think the automation of SMM campaigns is going to be more robust: monitoring of social networks, optimization of targeted advertising, analytics etc. I also think a lot of businesses are going to start to get rid of their online website because social media pages can accomplish the same thing in most cases, especially for those in the freelancing field- their social media page can act as a portfolio, and getting rid of a website will allow for less management and upkeep. I think social media pages are going to have the same capabilities of websites in a few years- and have more robust ways of tracking page traffic etc. I also think there is going to be some sort of integration with search engines and social media. I think any post is going to be searchable and they will merge in some way- creating a large database of content.

Overall, social media is only going to continue to grow and it is difficult to conceptualize future capabilities. I hope it continues to serve as a positive resource to individuals, and I really hope it does not eventually destroy our world- like many documentaries have pointed to. Social media needs to remain a positive platform where people are connecting and building relationships with one another.
